DJ Talent exclusive interview
The past few months have been a rollercoaster ride for DJ Talent. Plucked from obscurity to become one of the biggest stars in Britain's Got Talent history, he has also just been seen on television screens in the fantastic DJ Talent BOGOF Bingo advert. But, says the rapper, life since the show hasn't all been plain sailing. Knockbacks from Kelly Brook and a gruelling on-the-road schedule have made this summer his most challenging yet. Nevertheless, he returns on 28 September with a new single, I Say Britain, and chart stardom set firmly in his sights.
"I did want to take Kelly out on a date," says the Beckenham rapper. "But she said no, so it never ended up happening. I was very disappointed."
Still, Brook's loss was the nation's gain, as Talent put the extra time not spent romancing the former model to good use, heading out on the road for a series of live shows and special guest appearances, including a memorable slot on Scott Mills' Radio 1 show.
"I've been very busy," he says. "My schedule hasn't left me much time to do anything else. Between working on the launch of the new single and being out on the road I've been flat out. I haven't even been able to watch any of The X Factor."
The show, which, like Britain's Got Talent, features the judging skills of Simon Cowell, returned last month with a new format that has seen the svengali dish out his trademark barbed comments in front of arena crowds. However, suggestions that Cowell is anything less than a kind-hearted altruist do not go down well with DJ Talent.
"I don't agree with the criticism he gets. He's just a nice person giving people great opportunities to do what they enjoy," he says.
Indeed, it was the springboard provided by BGT that gave Talent the opportunity to front the BOGOF Bingo advert, which has just finished airing on digital TV and continues to circulate video sites online. Impressed by his larger-than-life persona, the makers knew he was the ideal man for the role.
"I really enjoyed filming the advert," says Talent. "I thought it was great fun and I love the special effects they have used on it." But how does his role as bingo spokesman sit with his image as a gold-toothed hard man of rap? "Well, I have played bingo before and my mum plays it a lot. I love the game, so anything that gets more people into playing it can only be a good thing.
"And BOGOF Bingo is the best bingo site in Britain, so I'm proud to be a part of it."
