Bingo photographer brings out halls beauty

Photographer loves to snap bingo halls

Photography book presents bingo as art

We're sure that there are a number of BOGOF free bingo players who would claim that the way they play veers towards the artistic. While we've never known bingo to be presented as art, one skilled structural-engineer-turned-photographer has other ideas.

Michael Hess, who was born in Germany, has been travelling around the UK taking snaps of various bingo halls for a new book. The photographer spent five years at clubs found primarily in the north of England, where he claims the most intriguing characters play.

Hess said: "I always dreamed of making a book of my photography, so I spent five years photographing 60 bingo halls. The majority of them were in the Liverpool and Newcastle area. I liked the smaller, independent bingo clubs best – that’s where you get the strongest characters."

First impressions

The photographer added that he found his experiences in the clubs to be initially intimidating, as bosses would introduce him to the throng before he went about taking pictures.

When Hess visited sites, he recalls, the manager would parade him around to the players, making it almost impossible to remain unnoticed as he snapped away later on. He said it proved problematic as people – emotional enough while trying to concentrate on the game – found it difficult to get comfortable.

Bingo players who prefer their own privacy during games can rest easy in the knowledge that BOGOF Bingo games can be enjoyed in whatever fashion you desire. This means you are in complete control of how you play and when!
