Bingo games brought to the stage
Free bingo comes to the stageBingo is one of the UKs best loved games. In recent years, the online bingo industry in particular has grown to huge proportions.
Writer Neil Bartlett has recognised the national appreciation we have for bingo, and decided to base a play on the concept.
In Bartletts bingo play, Everybody Loves a Winner, the entire auditorium of Manchesters Royal Exchange Theatre is transformed into a marvellous bingo hall. While a cast of 20 are seated ready for their game of bingo on stage, the audience are given tickets and invited to participate in the bingo.
The theatre actually attained a bingo license so that the play could take place and audience participation would be permitted, something that has never been done before.
Having the audience involved in the bingo means plenty of ad-libbing and engagement from the actors, really capturing the essence of a real bingo club or online bingo site, while providing the entertainment of a play at the same time.
Bartlett loves bingo
Bartlett underwent a year of thorough bingo research before penning the play. He and his crew played online bingo and visited bingo clubs, gaining an appreciation for the rich community spirit and love of the game that exists in the bingo world.
As Frankie, the caller, says to the audience, we don't just want you to know how it works - we want you to know how it feels. So you're not watching a bingo hall from the outside, you're in the bingo hall with its regulars.
You get to meet them, you get to hear their stories and, if you are the lucky winner that night, you get to go home rather better off than you were when you came in," says Bartlett.
